Port Klang is Malaysia’s busiest port and the country’s main gateway for sea freight, handling over 15.14 million TEUs in 2025. But “Port Klang” is actually two separate terminals — Northport and Westport — and choosing the right one affects your shipping cost, transit time, and customs clearance speed. This guide breaks down the difference between Northport and Westport, so you know exactly which terminal your cargo should move through.

At Paramount Express Agencies, we’ve coordinated freight through both terminals since 1997. Here’s what every shipper based in or trading through Klang, Selangor, and the wider Malaysia region needs to know.

What Is Port Klang?

Port Klang sits on the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, carrying roughly a quarter of global trade. It ranks among the top 12 busiest container ports globally and is Malaysia’s primary hub for both import-export cargo and regional transshipment.

Port Klang isn’t one terminal — it’s a dual-port system made up of Northport, Westport, and the smaller Southpoint. Northport and Westport are run by separate operators, sit on different sides of the Klang River estuary, and serve different types of cargo. Understanding this split is the first step to shipping smart through Klang.

Northport: Overview and Strengths

Northport is operated by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, under MMC Port Holdings, and sits on the mainland side of Port Klang with direct road connectivity into the Klang Valley. According to MMC Port Holdings’ own 2025 results, Northport posted its highest-ever annual container throughput of 3.80 million TEUs, alongside a record 12.90 million freight weight tonnes of conventional cargo. It also set monthly records of 366,131 TEUs (October 2025) and 1.33 million FWT (September 2025).

Northport’s traditional strength is conventional and break-bulk cargo — steel, machinery, project cargo, and heavy-lift shipments that don’t fit neatly into standard containers. It’s also a strong choice for palletised and general cargo moving into the Malaysian domestic market, since it’s closer to Klang town and the older industrial belt.

  • Mainland location with established road access to Klang and KL
  • Preferred by steel, machinery, and equipment importers
  • Undergoing a major expansion (Container Terminal 10 through CT17) alongside Westport’s own capacity growth

Westport: Overview and Strengths

Westport sits on Pulau Indah and is operated by Westports Holdings Berhad, a company listed on Bursa Malaysia. Established in 1994, it has grown into one of Southeast Asia’s most efficient deepwater container terminals. Westports’ own 2025 disclosures show the terminal handled 11.33 million TEUs for the year, up 3.2% from 10.98 million TEUs in 2024 — a figure the company confirmed was already tracking ahead of schedule at the half-year mark, with 5.57 million TEUs handled in 1H2025, up 3.1% year-on-year.

Westport is built for large-scale containerised transshipment, with a transshipment ratio of around 57.6% of its total volume in 2025. It connects to hundreds of ports worldwide and is the default choice for most FCL and LCL container shipments moving through Malaysia, especially cargo being transshipped onward to other regional ports. Under its extended concession (2024–2082), Westports is investing RM39.6 billion to expand capacity from roughly 14 million to 27 million TEUs through new terminals CT10–CT17.

  • Listed company (Bursa Malaysia: WPRTS) with publicly disclosed volume data
  • Strong e-commerce and distribution ecosystem on Pulau Indah
  • RM39.6 billion expansion underway through 2082 concession, targeting ~27 million TEU capacity

Which Terminal Should You Use?

In practice, most shippers don’t get to pick freely — the terminal is usually determined by which shipping line and service your cargo is booked on. But if you have a choice, or you’re setting up a new trade lane, here’s a simple way to think about it:

  • Standard container cargo (FCL/LCL): Westport is usually the better fit, thanks to its container-focused infrastructure and wider shipping line network.
  • Heavy machinery, steel coils, or oversized project cargo: Northport’s break-bulk handling capability is typically the stronger option.
  • Cargo destined for onward transshipment to regional ports: Westport, given its high transshipment ratio and extensive port connections.
  • Cargo moving straight into Klang Valley distribution: Either terminal works, but proximity and current congestion levels should guide the final call.

A good freight forwarder will check current schedules, congestion, and your cargo type before recommending a terminal — this is exactly where local, on-the-ground coordination pays off.

Free Trade Zone Advantages at Both Terminals

Both Northport and Westport operate within designated Free Trade Zones (FTZ), which gives shippers real cost and flexibility advantages:

  1. Duty deferral — goods stored in the FTZ don’t attract import duties or sales tax until released into the Principal Customs Area, which helps businesses that import in bulk but distribute over time.
  2. Duty-free re-export — cargo that enters the FTZ and is re-exported to another country incurs no Malaysian duties at all, making Port Klang a strong regional distribution hub.
  3. Consolidation and deconsolidation — you can break down FCL shipments into smaller loads, or combine smaller shipments into containers, within the FTZ without triggering duty liability.

Road Connectivity and Haulage Times

Both terminals benefit from strong expressway access via the KESAS (Kuala Lumpur–Klang Expressway) and NKVE (New Klang Valley Expressway). Factories and warehouses around Port Klang are generally a short drive from KL city centre, with the West Coast Expressway also having improved travel times to northern Perak, opening up more efficient distribution routes beyond the Klang Valley.

For shippers, this means haulage delays are rarely about distance — they’re almost always about how well your clearance timeline is coordinated with your trucking schedule.

Why Your Freight Forwarder Matters

Terminal choice is only half the equation. The other half is having a forwarder who works both terminals daily, understands current congestion patterns, and can align customs clearance with haulage pickup to avoid demurrage charges.

Paramount Express Agencies has been coordinating sea freight through Port Klang since 1997, with our team based in Subang Jaya, minutes from both Northport and Westport. We handle terminal selection, FTZ documentation, customs clearance, and haulage scheduling as one coordinated service — so your cargo moves through whichever terminal makes sense, without the guesswork.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Northport or Westport bigger?

Westport is significantly bigger by volume, handling 11.33 million TEUs in 2025 compared to Northport’s 3.80 million TEUs. Westport also carries a much higher share of transshipment cargo and connects to a wider global port network.

Can I choose which terminal my cargo uses?

Usually the terminal is determined by the shipping line and service your booking is on, rather than a free choice. Your freight forwarder can advise which shipping lines call at which terminal for your specific trade lane.

Which terminal is better for break-bulk or oversized cargo?

Northport is the stronger option for break-bulk, heavy-lift, and project cargo such as steel, machinery, and industrial equipment, thanks to its conventional cargo handling infrastructure.

Do both terminals offer Free Trade Zone benefits?

Yes. Both Northport and Westport operate within designated Free Trade Zones, offering duty deferral, duty-free re-export, and container consolidation without triggering customs duty liability.

How far is Port Klang from Kuala Lumpur?

Port Klang is a short drive from KL city centre by road, with strong expressway connectivity via the KESAS and NKVE highways.
